In today's BBC report here on Georgia's withdrawal of its diplomats from Moscow, the following item appears:
And Interfax also quoted Abkhazia's foreign minister, Sergei Shamba, as saying his province "may become part of the Union State of Russia and Belarus".
This Union used to be driven by Belarus when Lukashenka thought he had a chance to topple Putin. Russia was never so keen since it would have to prop up the Belarussian economy.
More recently it looked like even Lukashenka was having second thoughts and turning westwards, perhaps having got wind of what was being planned for Russian borders.
So does the Union State of Russia and Belarus still exist except on paper? Will the Belarussians want to pay their fair share of recovery of Abkhazia or will their leaders just be pleased that they can holiday in Sukhumi again?
