Here is a review of this book, by my friend Peter who has served time in Kosovo and many third world places and has interesting views on colonialism especially with regard to Kosovo.
Thank you for recommending the book by Rory Stewart. Absolutely brilliant and amusing, except at the end when they are being shelled and it is horribly real. Liked the story the press produced about the return of the kidnapped archeologist and the Italians taking credit, and then the Sun publishing a story that it was actually British SAS disguised as Italians. The most chilling line though was when he sees one of the Sheikhs after the bombardment, who says that they will miss him when he goes. Rory retorts" But you spent the last three days trying to kill me." "Oh that, don't take it personally."
As I said before here, you need to read it to understand exactly why everything is going wrong in Iraq.
